About Math Sister

Hi, I’m Karen!

I’ve been a math nut for as long as I can remember. My grandpa, an electrical engineer, was a big part of that - he taught me “5 squared is 25” and “12 squared is 144” before my school classes had covered multiplication, and had me memorizing “sine equals opposite over hypotenuse” when I didn’t know a hypotenuse from hippopotamus.

As a senior in high school, I got hired by my calculus teacher as a tutor for my fellow classmates. I loved helping people understand the material, and was frequently told “you explain it better than the teacher does!“ When I went to college, I worked all four years as a math lab tutor, continuing to fuel my passion for helping others understand what hadn’t made sense in class.

After graduating, I worked for nine years at a couple of online schools. I didn’t love lesson plans or grading, but I was still passionate about helping students learn. So after an unexpected layoff, I decided to turn to what I love best: helping people one-on-one! And so Math Sister was born.
